Why is the camera shutter count important?

Every time the shutter is opened, it wears out a little bit, and eventually, after too many openings and closings, the shutter will need to be replaced. It is an essential factor in determining the value and lifespan of the camera. Of course, other factors affect a camera's lifespan, such as how well it's been cared for, but the shutter count is still a good indicator of how long a particular camera is likely to last.

Can you reset the camera shutter count?

The shutter count data is stored in the camera's firmware or internal memory and can not generally be reset. However, some manufacturers that sell refurbished cameras might reset the shutter count to zero. If you use custom firmware, you might be able to reset the counter, but the operation requires much more skill than a regular user has, and you might run into the risk of damaging your camera.

What happens when a camera reaches its shutter count limit?

Most digital cameras still work beyond the shutter count limit but the image quality will suffer, and eventually, the shutter will need to be replaced. If you’re buying a second-hand camera, it’s important to buy one with a lower shutter count, which means the shutter is actuated way below its limit.

What is a 'good' shutter count?

here’s no right answer to this question. Most entry to mid-range DSLR cameras have a shutter count rating between 100,000 and 200,000. Professional grade cameras can have a shutter count rating between 400,000 and 500,000. If you are buying a second-hand camera, it’s always better to choose the one that has a shutter count way below its rating.
